Gastric Bypass

Gastric bypass refers to a surgical procedure which involves dividing the stomach and forming a small stomach pouch. The surgeon then attaches a section of the small intestine directly to the pouch. This allows food to bypass a portion of the small intestine that absorbs calories and nutrients. Having the smaller stomach pouch causes you to feel full sooner and eat less food, while bypassing a portion of the small intestine alters the hormones that mediate hunger and food cravings. Gastric bypass offers the best results for improvement or remission of Type 2 Diabetes.
